Democratizing Leadership is an organization committed to the education and dissemination of leadership development skills, attitudes, beliefs, and competencies.
Democratize \ di-ˈmä-krə-ˌtīz \ = to make available to the broad masses of the people¹
Leadership \ ˈlē-dər-ˌship \ = the capacity to lead¹
Leadership development has been a privileged pedagogy for individuals with access to specific training through work or school. The world’s complexity, interdependence, and sheer number of problems demand a new approach.
We believe that leadership can be taught and that leadership development should accessible and free for everyone.
Our organization aims to democratize access to leadership development in order to increase the pipeline of current and future leaders to solve these problems.
Our initial strategy focuses on K-12 education where we advocate for the intentional integration of leadership development for all students at all grade levels.
The current emphasis of the Democratizing Leadership team is twofold: 1) creating a platform for educators who already teach leadership development to share best practices, curriculum, and ideas with other educators; and 2) writing a book to help educators implement leadership development within their schools, communities, or homes.
We believe that there is a growing movement to teach leadership to students starting at increasingly younger ages. We invite all who are interested to join our community of practice hosted by Participate which also serves as our beta platform for advancing this work: the Democratizing Leadership Exchange.
